Your jewelry is a valuable investment you should be able to wear and enjoy for a lifetime. Proper cleaning is the key to maintaining the beauty of your jewelry, while also ensuring each piece stays in good condition. Because all metals are different, you may need to employ different cleaning techniques to care for your jewelry.

Silver

One of the simplest silver-cleaning methods requires only aluminum foil and powdered laundry detergent. Line a small container with foil, then fill it with a solution of hot water mixed with one tablespoon of non-bleach laundry detergent. Soak your silver for one minute, then remove it and rinse with clean water before letting it air-dry. You can polish your silver by dipping it in ketchup, then immediately rinsing and drying it.

Gold

To clean gold jewelry, try soaking it in a solution of 1/2 cup of clear ammonia and one cup of warm water. Leave your jewelry submerged for ten minutes, then remove it from the solution and wipe it clean with a soft cloth before allowing it to air-dry. Avoid using this cleaning technique for jewelry that contains pearls, as the ammonia could damage them. You can polish gemstone-free gold jewelry using a soft cloth dipped in beer; when you’re through, wipe it dry with a second soft cloth.

Platinum

Platinum jewelry can be cleaned with a few drops of mild dish soap mixed with warm water. Gently rub your jewelry with a soft cloth dipped in this solution, then rinse with clean water and allow it to air-dry.
